Be Content, part 1 - 9/20/2026 - Watch on You Tube
| Heb. 13:1-6 |
In many of Paul's writings, (yes, though the
author of Hebrews in unnamed, I believe it to be Paul based
on style and content) he concludes with simple, practical
advice for Godly living. While these truths may be simple,
they can be rather complex in light of the emotions of
everyday life. Much too often, rising emotions rule in the
moment and we quickly forget to apply these directions -
much to our hurt. We need the mind and governance of the
Lord Jesus Christ throughout the day and in every situation
we are confronted with. Hence, the admonition is "pray
without ceasing". (1 Thess. 5:17) When we are continually
connected to heaven, the devil and flesh cannot easily take
control of the situation and get us off track. God will
either prepare us in advance or keep us so that we are not
suddenly side-tracked. The verse to focus on here is verse 6
- "be content'. There is little better than supper in the
oven, warmth in the house, and children playing peacefully.
Even if circumstances mar this image, we still know that God
the Father is watching over us and that Jesus is our
shepherd. The true enemy against contentment is
covetousness, that is, wanting and scheming to get something
by our own methods that God did not provide. |
| Exo. 20:1-21 |
Here the ten commandments are spelled out.
While society may acknowledge their "moral" value, it does
NOT want the conclusion that they lead to - that an
individual's actions, thoughts, and intents of the heart
will be held accountable by the One who sits on the throne
of heaven, and therefore, they are sinners in need of the
Saviour! Verse 17 explicitly condemns coveting your
neighbor's house, his wife, and his possessions in general.
(Now, remember the question to Jesus, "who is my neighbour?"
(Luke 10:29) How many other things could you include in "nor
any thing that is thy neighbour's?" We see covetousness in
the political, corporate, and personal worlds. Internet
influencers are well-equipped to entice people to want, to
covet. Add beauty and possessions to the list. Some
influencers direct hate towards political groups or
nationalities, in order to promote fear or anger or
dominance. These all corrupt our fellowship with God,
violate a Christ-like nature, and rob us of contentment; and
ultimately, equip us to do the work of Satan. The child of
God needs to flee this work of the flesh. |
